PBCSF Funds Basketball Trip for Local Teens
Eight Glades-area students recently received the opportunity of a lifetime.
Amari Spirvey (Junior, Pahokee High School), Ja’Kyler Washington (Junior, Pahokee High School), Lon’teria McFadden (Junior, Pahokee High School) and India Shepherd (Freshman, Pahokee High School) were selected by a group of former NBA players to participate in a girl’s All-Star camp in Paterson, New Jersey from August 1st through the 5th, 2016.
Willie Canty (Junior, Glades Central High School), Dejuan Miller (Junior, Glades Central High School), Jamar McClain (Sophomore, Glades Central High School) and Thometrius Moore (Junior, Pahokee High School) were selected by the same group of former NBA players to participate in a boy’s All-Star camp in Paterson, New Jersey from August 8th through the 12th, 2016.
The girls were accompanied by Carla Starling, PBSO Corrections Support. The boys were accompanied by Glades Central High School basketball coach Kenneth Torrence (“Coach T”) who is also a PAL Deputy with PBSO.
All of the travel expenses were covered by the Palm Beach County Police Athletic League and the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Foundation.
In June, the Ball Stars Youth Camp made a stop at Glades Central High School and, with the help of PBSO, ran a program for about 200 kids. Ball Stars is led by former NBA All-Stars Otis Birdsong and Micheal Ray Richardson. Besides basketball, the camp promotes teamwork, leadership and respect, and teaches the kids life skills.
During the Belle Glade camp, these 8 youngsters really shined and were invited to join other select kids from around the country at the All-Star camp in New Jersey. |
